The former commander of the USS Cole is not happy that the Obama administration has released an unlawful enemy combatant from the Guantanamo Bay,Cuba, detention facility.
British Foreign Secretary David Miliband says he’s “pleased”with the return of Binyam Mohamed, the first Guantanamo detainee released since President Barack Obama took office. The British government had been fighting for his release since 2007. Mohamed was flown back to Britain Monday from Guantanamo and was then released after being questioned for a few hours. He claims to have been tortured at an alleged CIA covert site in Morocco.
However, not everyone is happy with the release. Commander Kirk Lippold, who was in charge of the USS Cole when it was attacked by homicide bombers, says he does not know why Mohamed was freed before a status review of Guantanamo inmates —that had been ordered by Obama —could be conducted.
