Obama fired General McKiernan purely for political reasons
A national security and foreign affairs analyst says President Obama’s decision to replace the top U.S. general in Afghanistan is not necessarily going to accomplish the new military strategy employed by the Pentagon, but it will give the appearance of “a new way ahead.”
On Monday,Defense Secretary Bob Gates said he asked for the resignation of General David McKiernan, maintaining that new military leadership is needed to go along with a new strategy and a new ambassador in Afghanistan. At the request of President Obama, more than 21,000 additional U.S. troops are beginning to arrive in Afghanistan to fight the Taliban insurgents.
