As soon as Israeli Foreign Minister Abba Eban exited the Oval Office that fateful night in May,1967,President Lyndon Johnson sank into his chair and looked at national security advisor Walt Rostow. The glance was really a question:What will Israel do?

“They’re going to hit,”Rostow said soberly.Johnson’s meeting with the urbane Eban is instructive for us right now,especially on the heels of Benjamin Netanyahu’s Oval Office meeting with Barack Obama this week. The American president’s thuggish behavior with a staunch ally is perhaps explained by old-fashioned hubris. But it doesn’t make those of us who support Israel sleep easier.

Obama took the opportunity to tighten the screws on Israel,signaling that he expects Netanyahu to play diplomatic ball with the Palestinians,even as both are getting their feet wet in leading their respective countries
