Arabs Protest American Policy in Middle East
The worst folly of President Obama’s speech at Cairo University is in the basic premise. According to White House,Obama is in Cairo today to “continue the outreach and the effort to change the conversation with the Muslim world. ”Obama has a sense of deep foreboding about this thing he calls the “Muslim World.”He recently told National Public Radio that “the current direction, the current trajectory in the region,is profoundly negative…for U.S. interests.”
But is this really where our problems lie?
As an editorial in Asia Times pointed out,”the Muslim world is just as fractured as the Christian world, even more so in the absence of any religious authority like the Catholic Church, which claims doctrinal authority over a billion people. Muslim religious authority is exercised ad hoc. The quasi-animist Islam of Sumatra and the Wahhabi Islam of Saudi Arabia have about as much in common as Midwest Methodists and Nigerian Pentecostals.”
If it was not a profoundly balkanized world and one that was monolitically anti-American,American soldiers would not have volunteered to risk their lives to save Muslims in Kosovo,Kuwait,Afghanistan,Iraq and Somalia. We have bled for Muslims. America has nothing to apologise for.
