In his State of the Union address to Congress Wednesday night,President Barack Obama took an unprecedented swipe at the U.S. Supreme Court,sharply criticizing its ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission.
Obama claimed that “the Supreme Court reversed a century of law to open the floodgates for special interests —including foreign contributions —to spend without limit in our elections.”Obama added that he doesn’t “think American elections should be bankrolled by America’s most powerful interests,or worse,by foreign entities.”
However,the decision by the Supreme Court,which affirmed the right of advocacy groups,businesses and unions to spend independently on political speech,does not change existing federal law barring political contributions and expenditures by foreign nationals.
As five Supreme Court Justices watched stone-faced,Justice Samuel Alito shook his head and seemed to say,“Not true,not true.”
“The President’s swipe at the Supreme Court was a breach of decorum,and represents the worst of Washington politics —scapegoating ‘special interest’bogeymen for all that ails Washington in an attempt to silence the diverse range of speakers in our democracy,”said Bradley A. Smith,chairman of the Center for Competitive Politics.
Alito is of course correct. Obama is wrong on two counts. First,this case did not reverse a century of law,secondly this does not allow foreign corporations to get more involved in campaigns.

OBAMA KNOWS THAT SOCIETY IS STUPID and ill informed. He was speaking to society,not one on one. Most people don't have a clue what he was talking about and won't check it out. So he will get away with another lie to society.
As individuals we are smart,and some will check out his comment,most won't. Most of his votes were from ill informed people and people that wanted to say that they voted for the first black President of the United States,so they can be part of history. That is a Piss Poor excuse to vote for someone. That is what our society has become. We all want our 10 minutes of fame.

My only hope is that people hearing that speech last night won't be sucked in once more as they were during the campaigne when he told lie after lie and they believed.

I believe that people are tired of being sucked in by his lies. Seems more and more of those who voted for him are now sorry they did. It appears he can smear his lies around and still step right into place. I have never known a President as devious and corrupted as the one in office today. Why can't the people see his records? We have been privy to the other 43 Presidents records,why not this one? Someone in another post doubted his Harvard attendance,I agree. From my understanding Obama and Michelle were both taken into Harvard under the minority percentage clause.
The president said in his SOTU speech that,“with all due deference to separation of powers,last week the Supreme Court reversed a century of law that I BELIEVE will open the floodgates for special interests –- including foreign corporations –- to spend without limit in our elections. I don’t think American elections should be bankrolled by America’s most powerful interests,or worse,by foreign entities.”……He didn’t say IT DID overturn current restrictions,he implied that he believed it may lead to that………..
The Wall Street Journal states,‘Although federal law currently prohibits foreign nationals from attempting to influence American elections,the court’s opinion EXPLICITY left open whether such measures are constitutional.’(WSJ link below). Which leads to the inevitable conclusion that foreign interests will quickly test this loop-hole.

The very narrow scope of this case was,'Is this 90 minute infomercial attacking Hillary Clinton a corporate campaign ad or not?'Instead of ruling on that question,the court decided to broaden the scope and ask the question whether corporate spending in elections should be limited. The parties in this case explicitly stipulated to the court they wouldn’t have to deal with those questions,and yet the justices reached out beyond their role to make this statement of their views of corporate influence in our political system.

Our democracy was founded on the core principle of ‘FOR AND BY THE PEOPLE’.
Corporations are LEGAL ENTITIES formed for the sole purpose of making profit and accumulating money. Corporations are not an oppressed (human)minority needing activist judges to protect their free speech by overturning long-standing precedent. Goldman Sachs alone made $3.4B profit last year –there’s only 300 million Americans. Who’s the oppressed now?
Handing over our democracy to the ones with the most money is very disturbing.
