A senior administration official tells The Associated Press that President Barack Obama has accepted Gen. Stanley McChrystal’s resignation as the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan and is replacing him with Gen. David Petraeus,head of U.S. Central Command.
McChrystal was pushed out over his blistering remarks about administration officials quoted in a magazine interview.
The official spoke only on condition of anonymity,because the president’s announcement was not yet public.
Petraeus now oversees the wars in both Afghanistan and Iraq.
McChrystal met privately with President Barack Obama at the White House Wednesday and then departed ahead of a scheduled war strategy session.
In the military they can not voice their opinions as you can see. Now I wonder when someone will question why those words were even spoken by the staff. It clearly shows they do not agree or respect the way Washingon is running the war. Same story Washington ought to let the military do their job. They aRE ALWAYS TRYING TO RUN WHAT THEY KNOW LITTLE ABOUT. NO WONDER THERE IS FRUSTRATION IN THE RANKS. What a loss for us. Good luck General and thank you for your service.
Whooa Sally–we do have a thing called civilian control of the military in this country. It's nothing new–it's in the Constitution. Washington has been running our wars since–well,Washington. If you want to live in a country where the military establishes policy,try Germany a few decades ago. McChrystal simply did what the other two macs (McClellan and MacArthur) did–exercised bad judgment and unprofessional conduct. Any military officer–even McChrystal's friends–will tell you the same.

This only shows more of Obamas arrogance. These things are said abou him all the time…just not in public or Rolling Stone. What it comes down to folks is that he's a LEADER who is comfortable in his own skin. Yes! In his own skin! A black man who doesn't shuffle and stammer and say "Ah shucks"to please the white folks. I'm praying that Petraeus can take charge of this snafu and put the "obamination"in his place. For if he cannot,all hope may be lost for the improvement of the troop's morale.

Jakob,I don't find anything to celebrate in McChrystal's self-destruction. He was a first-rate general,who was put in charge of a difficult war that the last administration stopped fighting in 2003. Now that Obama has put the emphasis back on the right war in Asia,the American people don't want to fight that war anymore. Out of frustration with that situation,the general made a very bad decision that now affects the future success of the operation. Yes,O did the right thing. McChrystal had to be yanked,he brought it on himself,but I'm sorry that he did.

Vietnam I know that Washington has to have a hand in running the military. Unfortunately many of them do not know how to make decisions that the commanders know. The General asked for more troops. Obama took 4 months to decide. I knew the General was gone as well as he did,Its the military way. 20 years as an Air Force wife taught me a lot. So very grateful for it….
I do not blame Mcchrystal &his group for making negative comments about Obama &this present administration. They don't have a clue about anything. In answer to Vietvet,if congress approves a war,or a police action,then they should let the military handle it. As you should well know Vietnam was nothing but a political war run by congress &that is why it dragged on &so many of our guys died for nothing. Yes,I am a disabled Vet .
No no no Steve. Like so many bloggers here,you 1. don't really know the Constitution and 2. forget that we live in a democracy. As such,the military fulfills the public policies established by the people's elected officials. Article I gives Congress the power to declare war and to appropriate funds to prosecute that war. Article II establishes the miltary as part of the Executive Branch (they are not their own separate branch) and names the president the Commander in Chief;also,the president "may require the Opinion,in writing,of the principal Officer in each of the executive Departments",meaning they can advise on,but do not make policy. The military may not like being subject to civilian authority,but this is not Nazi Germany. It's the system that's functioned under Jefferson,Madison,Polk,Lincoln,McKinley,Wilson,Roosevelt,Truman,Johnson,Nixon and both Bushes,our wartime Presidents,few of whom had been military officers. The current president is operating under the same Constitution.

Correct Michele,but same difference regarding the military. In the Roman Republic,officers served at the whim of and carried out the campaigns set by the elected Forum. It was only when the Republic mutated into the Empire that military officers pursued their own campaigns for their own glory without the consent of the people. Actually,in a Republic,elected officials are given more authority to determine policy without the will of the people than in a democracy.
War Story:on my second tour,I was having breakfast one day with a bunch of buddies,and I made the mistake of criticizing Nixon's foray into Cambodia. I believe I referred to him in a rather vulger way. I was overheard by a colonel who came over to our table and took my head off for criticizing the Commander-in-Chief. He said I was welcome to express my opinion in private but I was NEVER to criticize the President in uniform,in public,in country. McChrystal's boys need to be taken into the woodshed by that colonel. McChrystal,himself,visited Obama's woodshed yesterday.
