The Institute of International Education issued its annual “Open Doors”report this week which showed a 5.7 percent increase in foreign-born students enrolled in American colleges. Some interpret this as good news. I’m not one of them.
For university administrators, international students are a bonanza. Out of state students pay full freight tuition—often as much as three times what an instate resident pays. At the University of Washington, for example, residents pay $10,575 in annual tuition and fees while non-residents pay $28,059. Foreign enrollment has been on the rise since the academic year 2006-2007 and has increased 32 percent over the past decade. That’s plenty of extra cash flowing into the university tills.
The State Department loves having foreign students on American campuses. Assistant Secretary of State Ann Stock says that young people who study abroad “gain the global skills necessary to create solutions to 21st-century challenges.”The State Department underscored that it gives student visa applications “special priority.”
Another supporter is the Commerce Department which estimates that international students contribute more than $21 billion to the U.S. economy through tuition and living expenses which include room and board, supplies, transportation and health insurance and support for dependents.
Maybe the foreign students “gain global skills”and maybe they spend billions once they reach the United States. But what about the American kids they displace? They’d learn 21st-century skills and spend money, too. There are only a fixed number of incoming freshman seats. Once one is assigned,it’s gone.
Broader questions about the policy soundness of enrolling millions of foreign students need to be addressed. Are American universities prepared to absorb a tripling of undergraduate Chinese students, the figure reported by the New York Times? What percent of the universities’resources will have to be spent on English language learning and other assimilation tools?
Peggy Blumenthal, spokesman for the IIE,says that one reason for the dramatic increase in Chinese enrollment is….
Any thing to get American kids out of leftist branches of so-called higher learning IS A GOOD THING! Less fodder for future OWS events and more working educated voters to oust the sociocommunist!
Good parenting can prevent future OWS,at least for the youngsters,IMO.
The old hippies just haven't had a good riot in about 40 years, miss the action. Can't help them much.
What can we do?
I'm not a big proponent of foreign students displacing American students and I think the universities have jacked up the rates to take advantage of the foreign students as well, thus making the education burden even worse for all students,US and foreign.
On the other hand, the students from many foreign countries just plain out-perform our own on standardized tests, educational depth and breadth academically. Unless we want to play "affirmative action"for US citizens (which I also don't agree with for minorities),we need to dump the dysfunctional public school system and start actually educating American students so they compete academically at least. We could learn a thing or two from India and China about how to bring facts and figures back into our educational system instead of "feeling"our way through Math and Science.
Don't forget the In State tuition for illegal aliens at colleges in several States. This is a perk not offered to out of State U.S. citizens!
Yeah, the same program that educated many arab kids enough to create OPEC,educate them in nuclear bomb making, and how to fly large aircraft (although they weren't big on the landings) We had a lot of foriegn kids at my college. Most were hateful towards us,a few were grateful to be out of their homeland The TA's were so poorly educated that we had to teach them. The ones that get into medical school don't want to go home because they would not be able to buy their Porshes and Lambos and live in a nice house without fear for their lives
Colleges have become an industry in the USA,and are riding a huge student loan bubble that the Taxpayers will wind up taking care of when it bursts,
It is my considered opinion that a great many kids who enroll in college would be better served both financially and career wise with a vocational education.
A college degree, once was the key to a good job and a secure future, has become so common that it has lost any intrinsic value.
While it may make a person seem intelligent to be able quote Shakespeare and Kipling,to tell a Monet from a Renoir,or discuss the probabilities of time travel ad nauseum, these are not the skills needed to move our country forward.
In California,Illegal Aliens receive the same College Rates as Residents. Jerry Brown recently signed the "Dream Act"! making this the law! In California there are
Millions of Illegal Aliens that are allowed here in the hope they can all vote many
times for Obama! The Obama Camp is working on this! Obama has destroyed our
Country! He has to go in 2012. Tell everyone you know to vote!
Foreigners are the only ones who can afford to go to college,
