For the first time in history, U.S. Marines were ordered to surrender their arms while attending a dog-and-pony-show speech by a visiting Secretary of Defense. Before the speech, 200 troops gathered at Camp Leatherneck. As Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta’s plane was landing, a suicide driver attempted to ram it but crashed into a ditch before it could get onto the runway. Mr. Panetta and his entourage were not hurt.
In a case of overreaction, the base commander, Major General Charles Gurganus, ordered the camp Sargent Major to have the attending Marines secure their arms outside and return to the tent. In a war zone in an area where a probable terrorist act had just occurred, this is not a wise move but alas very politically correct.
As reported in the New York Times, “General Gurganus told reporters later that he had wanted a consistent policy for everyone in the tent, and that “I wanted to have the Marines look just like their Afghan partners,” noting, “You’ve got one of the most important people in the world in the room.” He insisted that his decision had had nothing to do with the massacre; later, defense officials said the decision had had nothing to do with the truck at the airfield. To quote General McAuliffe when asked by the Germans to surrender, “Nuts.” He probably was covering for the secretary’s advance team demanding that all the attendants be unarmed during the visit. Do you think this would happen in any other Administration?
“Pride in and respect for” our troops are only words to leftists, but not allowing them to be armed in your presence is a sign of mistrust that no amount of spin can justify or talk away. If Secretary Panetta and General Gurganus don’t trust their charges, they need to find another line of work, preferably on MSNBC where they belong.
