Just a few miles from my North Texas home,a hapless criminal unintentionally proved the merits of gun ownership.
During a botched burglary attempt,a knife-wielding 21-year-old broke a window to gain entry into a home just a few blocks away from his own.
Hearing the sound of shattering glass around 2:30 a.m.,the homeowner grabbed his .40-caliber handgun,called the police,and began investigating the situation.
While still on the phone with dispatchers,he reportedly shot the intruder in the stomach.
“During the conversation with him,we could hear him yelling,‘You came at me with a knife,”said a detective handling the case. He said police arrived at the scene about a minute and a half after the call.
When officers arrived,they broke the home’s front door glass to enter,discovering the homeowner still holding the criminal at gunpoint.
A neighbor said she was “still in shock,”adding victims of such crimes “never think it’s your neighbors.”
While some might be able to fool themselves into believing they live in a crime-free neighborhood and needn’t worry about violent crime,the fact remains that we never know when —or by whom —we might face danger.
Conservatives know that the best way to confront unknown situations is with our eyes open. To paraphrase the credo of another organization despised by the left,the Boy Scouts,law-abiding gun owners do their best to always be prepared.
If unarmed,this homeowner could have easily lost his possessions or his life to an uncaring criminal. Instead,he is only out a window and a bullet while the intruder got to make a pit stop to the hospital on his way to jail.
The lunatic left sees a murderer behind every gun sale. Support for gun bans,while purportedly designed to protect us from unknown risk,actually achieves the opposite result by creating an entire class of victims.
