National Rifle Association president Wayne La Pierre’s highly anticipated statement about the Connecticut school shooting and NRA’s position on it caused quite a stir.
His prefaced his proposed strategy by issuing a “call on Congress today to act immediately,to appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every school—and to do it now,to make sure that blanket of safety is in place when our children return to school in January.”
Congressional appropriations mean oversight by liberals intent on disarming Americans and “wobbly”Republicans (to use former British Prime Minister Margret Thatcher’s term ) anxious to survive 2014 mid term elections.
Coming from an unsafe urban environment,I’m skeptical of measures which don’t engage local stakeholders and staff as active partners in protection. Even unarmed patrols of parents and other concerned citizens are a step in the right direction. Ideally, weapons among faculty and staff harden targets even more, especially in violent inner cities.
More police will enhance safety but also lulls otherwise able adults into handing the baton of safety liberty off to government yet again.
Inner city school systems face daily threats from armed assailants, including students and outsiders. Telling responsible adults and school staff that one or two police officers shoulder the safety liberty for hundreds is inadequate.
President Obama’s hometown of Chicago has had 446 school-age children shot this year without a peep from the White House or civil rights organizations like the NAACP. Black liberal silence about street crime is the height of discrimination, especially as they fall over themselves to disarm Americans after tragedies like Newtown. Their indifference to low income Black life isn’t surprising given clear contempt for the very lower class used for political power.
Low income Americans of all colors better start fighting more for their safety liberty as bleeding hearts rush to make them helpless.
Unlike the president,Congress and big name anti-gun liberals like Soledad O’Brien, lower income Americans don’t rate special police coverage nor can they afford armed private protectors.
While occasional horrific suburban school massacres shock the country, inner city neighborhoods and school zones run red on a regular basis.
Until the inner city demands equal attention from liberals it faithfully elects,Black crime victims continue getting second class treatment from faces on high resembling them, but numb to their pain.
Did the NRA cave to liberal pressure by calling for more police, instead of arming teachers like Texas districts are doing?
Yes they did.
They chose a compromise none but easily dismissed radicals would oppose. By asking for more police, they look mainstream and responsible, thus deflating hysterical cries of extremism.
Congressmen and candidates they’ll back in 2014 are breathing a collective sigh of relief. I support the NRA but this seems the likely back story.
It’s not a bad idea, but I hasten to remind inner city residents, faculty and staff of safety liberty’s cruel rule about security inequality:“Rich people get bodyguards—poor people get shot.”
