Michelle Obama has her fingers in a number of pies,so to speak,in her quest to encourage children to get fit. Her “Let’s Move”campaign includes such initiatives as a hip-hop album and a menu of cafeteria food options no child seems willing to eat.
When the U.S. Postal Service wanted to get in on the action,it ordered a series of stamps featuring cartoon images of children engaged in a variety of activities. USPS Marketing Chief Nagisa Manabe saw the opportunity to capitalize on the first lady’s involvement and invited her to participate in a ceremony marking the series’roll out.
In the interim, however, the stamps’playful designs have been called to task for the absence of safety equipment. According to a report originally filed by Linn’s Stamp News, the President’s Council on Fitness,Sports, and Nutrition found at least three of the drawings to be unacceptable. Pictured on these stamps are children doing a headstand, skateboarding, and diving into a pool without helmets or safety gear.
One wonders how the organization decided these three were more inappropriate than other stylized activities —baseball, rope climbing, and soccer, for instance —also pictured without headgear and padding.
While no one wants to unnecessarily put children in harm’s way,the nanny state leftists in charge of this nation continually try to put the next generation in a bubble. The trend has gotten so convoluted that even crudely drawn cartoon characters on a stamp cannot even be sold without their two-dimensional knee pads.
In a broader sense, this incident illustrates the collision of two leftist tenets working at cross-purposes. On one hand,Michelle Obama and her ilk want to spread her dietary indoctrination to as wide an audience as possible;and issuing this series of stamps would certainly work to that end. Conversely, the overwhelming urge to regulate anything and everything in existence will not permit the left to look upon a rendering of children playing without a full suit of armor.
The progressive cause is reliant on its adherents walking in lockstep with one another;otherwise, the tenuous logic of their arguments could never gain traction. As evidenced by the decision to scrap the entire set of stamps, however, regulatory bureaucracy trumps all else in the eyes of the modern left.
