Most progressives are inclined to think of themselves as the intellectual elite in society. However, the reality is they have shown their incompetence time and time again. The most recent example for me was when I was online and saw a post about Chris Hayes, the not so astute political pundit from MSNBC,attempting to point out that the government shutdown we are currently in the midst of is the fault of our flawed Constitution.
My first reaction was that this was another attempt by an MSNBC personality attempting at relevance, but then I remembered Obama saying that the Constitution was a living document. So,since it is clear progressives have no true understanding of our Constitution,it is time for them to be enrolled in Constitution 101.
Along with the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution formed the foundational basis and framework for our system of government. But I am going to start with the Preamble before I dive into the Constitution.
“We The People”
Progressives conveniently overlook that the Constitution starts off with those three words. The clear implication is that rule by a single man,a single party, etc. is to be avoided at all costs. There is not a single occurrence – at any point in history – of governmental power so concentrated as progressives want to occur in this country now that did not end up with the populace being victimized by neglect, greed, torture, and, quite commonly, death, to name a few examples.
So when Woody Allen said that Obama should be a dictator for a while, he is showing his ignorance of our Constitution. When Sheila Jackson Lee implied just recently that Obama should institute martial law to end the government shutdown, her ignorance came shining through.
The focus of our government is to be on the people – not on the government,as progressives want.
The Preamble identifies the five principles that were used to limit the power of the government by establishing the parameters by which it would be constrained. Each branch of the government is also constrained with defined powers within the Constitution itself.
The legislative branch has 18 clauses devoted to defining its powers as shown in Article 1,Section 8. The very next section starts setting limitations on the powers of the legislative branch. The executive branch has 8 powers defined in Sections 2 and 3 of Article II. However,as with the legislative branch, the executive branch is also tasked with two mandatory requirements that must be conducted. The same definition and limitation of power is also defined for the judicial branch as well.
The Bill of Rights, which was adopted almost immediately after the Constitution, also places restrictions on the powers of the federal government to ensure that the people are indeed protected from an overzealous government.
The checks and balance system within our government was not only designed to keep one branch from being too powerful – it was also designed to force our leaders to compromise on the actions the government would undertake in the best interest of the people.
Yet,progressives will tell you that the powers of the government are to be expanded to ensure that things such as social justice, economic equality, etc. are achieved as the government is the only entity that is capable of doing so.
Once again, progressives are showing a complete lack of understanding about the Constitution. The government is to promote the general welfare – not provide it. (There is a difference. Look it up.) The government is to have no role in the economy except in cases of regulating interstate commerce, only to ensure that all states are treated fairly;nor is the government supposed to ensure economic opportunity for all – much less economic equality (i.e. “spread the wealth around”).
So,all of the liberal entitlements progressives are so enamored with go against the very essence of the Constitution.
The “Living” Constitution
The concept of the “living” constitution, which Obama is a proponent of,is also devoid of any connection with the understanding of government and how it could properly operate. To say that the foundational document of our government should be interpreted through the context of the current time is to subject our laws to the whims of the individual who is interpreting it at the moment. That idea is an open invitation to disaster of epic proportions because of their biases, prejudices, and desires.
Even though the Constitution is indeed a static document, the Founding Fathers incorporated a formal change process. Updating the Constitution with amendments was reserved for the states to decide – not the federal government. It was a check on the power of the federal government as a whole by the states.
Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are the only rights we are guaranteed in this country. The expectation afterwards was that the individual will take it upon himself to achieve his own dreams.
Progressives need to look beyond the end of their own nose and realize that if the government is to ensure your success and happiness,it will also be empowered to ensure your suffering and despair. That is the end result of all governments instituted with the focus not being on the people.
Despite the constant use of the race card by progressives, questioning Obama is a responsibility of all people in this country. We are charged with that task in the Declaration of Independence –
“…But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism,it is their right,it is their duty,to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security…”
Obama’s attempts to grab power for himself to institute a tyrannical government are to be fought against – through peaceful disagreement at first, then by our vote, and finally by force as needed.
