The early favorite to win a Senate race that ultimately went to Ted Cruz,Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst learned firsthand what Tea Party support can do for a candidate. Since then,he has tried to curry favor in the conservative movement and,in the midst of another campaign, recently spoke to a Tea Party group near Fort Worth.
During his conversation, which dealt with encroaching Islamic extremism within the U.S.,Dewhurst also made some bold remarks that resonated with many in the crowd.
After soliciting votes by explaining that the upcoming “election is about protecting you and your freedoms, which are given to you by God,”he explained that those same liberties “are being trampled on by Barack Obama right now.”
While such criticism is considered boilerplate among most Republicans, the state’s second-in-command went a step further.
“I don’t know about you,”he continued,“but Barack Obama ought to be impeached.”
His proclamation received audible support from the crowd as Dewhurst explained that he feels such action is warranted “[n]ot only for trampling on our liberties, but what he did in Benghazi is just a crime.”
Following the event,he expounded on his comments to the local press, calling Obama’s failure to act in the aftermath of the Benghazi attack “just outrageous.”He also made it clear that his expressed opinions were those of a private citizen, not an elected official.
Still,he is not the only prominent Republican to hint at some level of support for impeachment. Sarah Palin recently indicated Obama’s continued inaction in the ongoing debt debate could be interpreted as an impeachable offense.
As his approval rating continues its prolonged free fall,it is painfully obvious that Obama’s campaign rhetoric bears no resemblance to reality. He claimed to be a uniter, though he has ushered in the most divided America since the Civil War.
Much to the chagrin of race-obsessed talking heads like Chris Matthews,it has nothing to do with skin color. Dewhurst laid out a number of reasons why he feels Obama should be removed from office, and “because he is (half) black”was not among them.
