While it is undeniable a large portion of the political left strongly favors policies derived or directly taken from Socialist regimes, most won’t come out and say so. Outspoken comedian and actor Russell Brand, however,is not your usual liberal.
In a recent BBC interview, the star explained that he is fed up with the prevailing system of politics, suggesting a revolution is necessary to create the leftist utopia he favors.
He said he wants to see a “socialist egalitarian system based on the massive redistribution of wealth, heavy taxation of corporations and massive responsibility for energy companies and any companies exploiting the environment.”
Though his rhetoric is more transparent,Brand’s comments basically just paraphrase Barack Obama’s campaign promises.
He continues by declaring “the very concept of profit should be hugely reduced.”
The utter disconnect of millionaire entertainers is so apparent in comments such as this. Without a profit motive, there would be no reason to make the movies and comedy specials in which he stars.
In addition to “calling for change”and “calling for genuine alternatives,”Brand supports a global revolution —though he is quick to admit he has no idea how such an event would play out.
“Don’t ask me to sit here in an interview with you,”he told his interviewer,“in a bloody hotel room, and devise a global utopian system.”
Perhaps he doesn’t know how a socialist resurgence would affect the world, but millions who suffered under such regimes certainly do.
After years of oppression, countless resourceful and brave citizens from other nations escaped their harsh rule to enjoy the unparalleled freedoms of Western culture. Today, however,Brand and other unhinged leftists want to impose the same liberty-stifling control on the entire world’s population.
One wonders how he would react when notified his wealth would be subject to “massive redistribution.”
