Have Conservatives Fallen Out Of Love With America?

Jim DeMint, a former Republican senator and current president of the Heritage Foundation, addressed an engaged CPAC crowd Saturday. The Western Center for Journalism covered the three-day conference, during which DeMint explained why many conservatives are experiencing an increasingly strained relationship with America.

Only about one in 10 Americans have faith in Congress, he said, and “a majority say the country is on the wrong track.”

Chief among those disillusioned citizens, he explained, are those Tea Party patriots who see our current leaders moving the nation away from its founding ideals.

“What is happening … is enough to frustrate and depress even the most optimistic Americans,” he said.

While our Constitution was designed to provide individuals with the freedom to pursue their own path to happiness, DeMint lamented the fact that a federal bureaucracy is now seeking to demand all Americans endorse the actions of their fellow citizens.

“When so many viewpoints and lifestyles are forced into one mold,” he asserted, “the free market of ideas becomes a tyranny over our hearts and minds.”

Instead of embracing true diversity, today’s leftists push a one-size-fits-all environment. As examples, DeMint brought up the fact that Americans are being compelled to financially support abortion. And parents are seeing school choice curtailed in the unilateral support of failing public schools backed by leftist teachers unions.

“Our voices are no longer heard or even wanted by our representatives in Congress,” he said, which too often means “our love for America and our fellow citizens is strained.”

Though conservatives still have a deep-seated adoration for the nation envisioned by our founders, he continued, a “broken system” is “tearing down the country we love.”

If Americans united behind the core principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional values, and a strong national defense, he concluded, that unbridled love for our nation can and will be rekindled.

“Ideas that built a strong America can once again unite us,” he said. State and local governments, not federal bureaucrats, must once again be allowed to determine what works best for particular communities.

“When Washington stops trying to direct all aspects of our lives,” he said, “Americans will fall in love with each other and our country.”

I think the message here is forget the old style, in with the new, which is the “Tea Party”. The old RinO’s can’t stand to hear or know them. That’s one reason for all the criticism of the Tea Party. I say to them get over it, it’s coming and we will return to the conservative values once again. Remember the word “Progressive”, is code word for Communist.
