Though divorce proceedings by their very nature are typically less than amicable, some are far more contentious than others. When such a fiery break-up involves someone with the notoriety of Congressman Alan Grayson, developments can be especially shocking.
Grayson’s estranged wife, Lolita, recently talked to investigators following a reported domestic disturbance at the couple’s Orlando, Fla. home. Her accusations paint a picture of a violent, unfaithful man. If true, it seems his penchant for making outrageous public comments might not be his biggest character flaw after all.
“I’m done,” Lolita told police. “My husband has always been hitting me for years. He’s been hitting me a lot. I’ve been so quiet for years.”
Despite her allegation that Grayson attempted to kill her, she said she wanted to make the marriage work until she realized he had no intention of curtailing his philandering ways.
“I told him, ‘Handsome, I know the fact that you have been cheating for more than a year, two years,’” she continued, noting he “doesn’t have any remorse.”
According to her statement, he responded by saying Lolita was “hurting” him by bringing up his mistresses.
Numerous outlandish comments as a public official have earned him the disdain of conservatives across the nation. One such incident, however, allegedly had implications at home, as well. Lolita claimed that, prior to the congressman sending an email comparing the Tea Party to members of the Ku Klux Klan, she urged him to reconsider.
“F—k off,” he allegedly responded.
While he has not faced any criminal charges for spousal abuse, a family friend corroborates Lolita’s testimony. Tom Ubl said he has visited the couple on multiple occasions, during which he witnessed Grayson engage in the verbal abuse of his wife.
Of course, divorce proceedings are often filled with exaggerated rhetoric on the part of an aggrieved party. Considering Grayson’s history of making wild accusations in public, however, some might find it easier to believe he is capable of making irresponsible choices behind closed doors.
