Koch Brother Receives Praise From An Unlikely Source

Routinely disparaged by leftist politicians and partisan media sources, billionaire Republican donors Charles and David Koch are likely immune to the harsh words used against them on a daily basis. The recent gratitude one of the brothers received from MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell, however, was altogether unexpected.

The proven Koch critic admitted as much, actually issuing a disclaimer before making the shocking statement.

“Now brace yourselves please,” he told viewers earlier this week, “for the first positive words said about David Koch on this program.

O’Donnell returned to his duties as host of MSNBC’s The Last Word after he was injured in a motor vehicle accident more than two months ago.

He and his brother, Michael, were airlifted from the Virgin Islands to hospitals in America. It was upon arriving at that facility, with a broken hip, that he realized who played a major role in his ability to receive excellent care.

“David Koch has given over $25 million to the hospital that put me and many other men, women, and children back together,” he said.

He explained how he initially recognized the philanthropist’s impact as he entered New York’s Hospital for Special Surgery, which he noted is ranked number one in the world for orthopedic surgeries.

“The first words I saw when I was rolled into the hospital was the name David H. Koch,” he said.

While he still retains disdain for the brothers’ political activism, noting he agrees with the criticism regularly expressed by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, O’Donnell used a quote by F. Scott Fitzgerald to explain his current position.

“The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function.”

The host encouraged his audience to try to do exactly that, noting that individuals “can be outraged by what the Koch brothers do with their money in politics” and still “appreciate what they contribute to hospitals and medical research.”
