Secretary of State Hillary Clinton meets with Manuel Zelaya in Washington on September 3, 2009. (State Dept. Photo by Michael Gross)

An agreement signed in Colombia this week allowing the ousted former Honduran president, Manuel Zelaya, to return home and resume political activity without fear of prosecution marks “a great day” for the Honduran people, according to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

But in the view of Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, the accord sets the stage for Zelaya and his leftist ally, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, to further damage democracy in the small Central American country.

“Hugo Chavez’s handprints are all over this deal,” Ros-Lehtinen said in a statement. “He can’t wait to have Zelaya back in Honduras so he can begin pulling the strings again and undermine that nation’s democracy.”

Clinton, by contrast, said on Monday that the U.S. “commends” the Chavez regime for its role in securing the agreement.

Zelaya was removed from office in June 2009 by the military – acting on the orders of the Supreme Court – and flown to neighboring Costa Rica.

In a move that would have mirrored similar steps taken by Chavez and other Latin American leftists, Zelaya was planning a referendum to convene a constituent assembly, to amend the constitutional one-term limit on presidential power.

As the constitution prohibits such a move and disqualifies from public office anyone who attempts it, the Supreme Court ordered his removal.

Congressional leader Roberto Micheletti, next in the constitutional line of succession, was duly sworn in as interim president, to serve until scheduled presidential elections took place five months later. Porfirio Lobo won that election, and took office in early 2010.

Three months after he was ousted, Zelaya sneaked back into Honduras and sought refuge at the Brazilian Embassy. Lobo later arranged for him to get safe passage out of the country, and he has been living in exile in the Dominican Republic since then.

On Sunday, Zelaya and Lobo signed an accord in the Colombian city of Cartagena that will allow him to return home.

But it also paves the way for a return to politics for Zelaya who, according to Chavez, has not dropped his plans to push for a constituent assembly.

The agreement also is meant to remove the last hurdle to Honduras’ re-entry into the Organization of American States (OAS), a body from which it was ejected over the Zelaya affair.

The Obama administration supported Honduras’ expulsion from the OAS, agreeing with Zelaya’s – and Chavez’ – contention that his ousting amounted to a “coup.”

That stance was a controversial one: Honduras’ constitution limits the presidency to a single, four-year term and outlaws not just extending the limits, but even proposing that they be changed.

Article 239 reads, “Anyone who violates this provision or who proposes its reform, as well as those who support that violation directly or indirectly, will immediately cease to hold their respective positions, and will be disqualified from any public post for 10 years.”

An Aug. 2009 Law Library of Congress report concluded that Zelaya’s ousting – although not his expatriation – was constitutional.

Nonetheless, the Obama administration came down on Chavez’ side of the argument….

Kevin “Coach” Collins, FloydReports.com

Recently Texas Republican Congressman Ted Poe reintroduced an idea whose time might have finally come. He addressed Congress asking that we review the foreign aid we are sending to countries around the world, with the purpose of cutting most of it. Referring to the many countries with their hands out looking for foreign aid, Poe asked a direct question: “Why do we need to pay them to hate us?”

Poe’s fact-filled, but brief, speech contained some compelling points.

We are giving foreign aid money, our tax dollars, to 150 of the 192 countries of the world. Some of these counties are ungratefu,l but most of the biggest recipients are outright hostile toward us and can fairly be accused of hating us.

Among the countries Poe singled out were Venezuela and Cuba, which gets $20 million of our money….

Free speech has always been one of our most cherished rights. It has come under attack repeatedly by those who find it to be an inconvenient and unwanted obstacle to the attainment of their political goals. Sometimes, those in positions of power ignore the First Amendment and issue laws and regulations to silence their opponents. Other times, politicians or citizens work on an unofficial level, resorting to influence or intimidation to achieve censorship.

President John Adams signed the Sedition Act to criminalize “false, scandalous, and malicious writing” against the government or its officials. Americans didn’t like the federal government censoring expression or presuming to determine truth, so they canned Adams in the next election.

Abraham Lincoln jailed newspapermen whose comments on the Civil War were not to his liking.

In 1935, Franklin Roosevelt signed the National Labor Relations Act, effectively curtailing employers’ freedom to talk with their own employees about their company’s financial condition and the affordability of wages and benefits.

Both Roosevelt and Richard Nixon imposed various wage and price controls. Since prices are the language through which present value is communicated between potential buyers and sellers, they essentially banned a form of free economic speech.

The assault on free speech seems to have accelerated in recent years. Freelance censors on the Left have prevented dozens of conservatives from giving scheduled speeches on college campuses by shouts, chants, and even physical aggression.

A favorite tactic of….

Hugo Chavez, the yanqui-hating dictator of Venezuela, will not accept Washington’s proposed emissary and has dared the United States to break diplomatic relations. It seems Ambassador-select Larry Palmer’s sin is that he did not applaud Chavez when he used his rubber-stamp parliament to perpetuate his dictatorial regime. The State Department’s limp-wristed response was to cancel the visa of the Venezuelan ambassador. That, and silence from the White House, told the megalomaniac in Caracas exactly what the United States will do when Iran finishes building a nuclear missile base in Venezuela — absolutely nothing.

Like Marxist Fidel Castro was in the 1960s, Caudillo Chavez is today’s darling of American liberals and the international left. They are enchanted with his underclass roots, his anti-imperialist posturing, and insults he hurls at the United States in media shows that are crowd-pleasing combinations of Keith Olbermann rants and videos of “The Big Guy from Brooklyn.” More ominously, Chavez has imitated Castro, and like Fidel he has found a big brother to give him the nuclear military clout to dominate Latin America: The Islamic Republic of Iran.

Planning for Iran’s penetration of the Western Hemisphere is well underway.

Victim in Chief Barack Hussein Obama is adding to his long list of evil, greedy corporations taking advantage of millions of fellow victims in America. After targeting Big Oil and the health-insurance evildoers, the banks are now the target of his ire.

On Thursday, Mr. Obama made it clear he will no longer allow big banks to victimize the population. The days of their "obscene" profits and bonuses are over, and he is ready for a "fight" if they even consider opposing his new taxes and regulations.

It appears we are all victims of all these mean, greedy, nasty people who run big business in America. Mr. Obama is going to put them in their place and save us poor victims from the evil ways of big business.

The "fat cats" are now going to pay.

Forget the fact that for years Big Oil has made billions of gallons of gasoline available at thousands of gas stations throughout America, making the refueling of our vehicles much easier. Ignore the warmth in the winter and cool in the summer produced from the energy Big Oil makes available in abundance without interruption – or the ability to cook meals with the natural gas or electric Big Oil provides instead of having to make a fire in our homes. All of this apparently means nothing to Mr. Obama.

Obama believes he is so great people will just follow his words

Say what you will about Bill Clinton’s foreign policy shortcomings, but for the most part he had the good sense not to squander Ronald Reagan’s legacy of peace through strength.

By contrast, Barack Obama’s foreign policy seems to be predicated on a boundless faith in his own persuasive powers and the naïve notion that our international antagonists are merely misunderstood. Not since Jimmy Carter has American foreign policy been so obsequious or short-sighted.

Rather than isolate Argentine menace Hugo Chavez, President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have managed the remarkable feat of backing Chavez’s acolyte in Honduras, ousted president Manuel Zelaya, while still eliciting ridicule from Latin America’s most notorious thug.

Zelaya with his role model Chavez,Obama is working to reinstate Zelaya

The Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa erupted into demonstrations amid reports ousted president Manuel Zelaya has returned.

The interim government, led by Roberto Micheletti, issued denials that Zelaya is was the country. But the U.S. State Department confirmed Zelaya was in Honduras, and he now has shown himself to the public from the Brazilian embassy.

The latest development threatened to reignite demonstrations that broke out earlier today after reports of Zelaya’s return. Police helicopters, possibly informed that Zelaya had revealed his whereabouts, flew close to the Brazilian embassy, although the police and military seemed to be keeping some distance.

The Obama administration has shown strong support for Zelaya despite widespread criticism that the former president was leading the country down a path eerily similar to that of Venezuela under its leftist president, Hugo Chavez.

Zelaya declared he was in the capital during a broadcast today on Venezuela’ government-owned Telesur network.

"I’m here in the Honduran capital, in the first place carrying out the people’ will, which has insisted on my restoration," Zelaya said.

Obama is empowering our enemies

There’s a joke about a man who tells a psychiatrist, “Everybody hates me,” to which the psychiatrist responds, “That’s ridiculous – everyone doesn’t know you, yet.” Which brings me to Barack Obama: one of the best-informed people in the American security establishment told me the other day that the president is a “Manchurian Candidate”.

That can’t be true – Manchuria isn’t in the business of brainwashing prospective presidential candidates any more. There’s no one left to betray America to. Obama is creating astrategic void in which no major power will dominate, and every minor power must fend for itself. The outcome is incalculably hard to analyze and terrifying to consider.

Obama doesn’t want to betray the United States; he only wants to empower America’s enemies. Forcing Israel to abandon its strategic buffer (the so-called settlements) was supposed to placate Iran, so that Iran would help America stabilize Iraq, where its influence looms large over the Shi’ite majority.

By Lauri B. Regan, American Thinker

Obama sides with Castro, Chavez and Ahmadinejad over oppressed citizens

“To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history, but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist.” – Barack Obama’s Inaugural Address, January 20, 2009

The left in this country spent the Bush years wringing their hands, frustrated over efforts at nation building in the Mideast. Newsweek’s attempt at rewriting history with claims of success in Iraq due to Obama’s policies won’t change the fact that the Bush administration’s “war of choice” was a success. An entire population of repressed people now lives in freedom due to United States Mideast policy under President Bush. And the Iranian people desire a similar fate if only the American President were to seize the opportunity and support the populace demanding that their voices be heard.

Unfortunately, President Obama has traveled the globe handing out carrots to each and every one of America’s enemies, leaders who also happen to be repressive dictators. Yet, no matter which tyrant Obama approaches with his open hand, he has, as my kids like to say, been “dissed.”

With each fist bump from Hugo Chavez, Team Medvedev/Putin, Kim Jong-Il and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, one would expect that Obama would learn to close his open palm and offer up the tough policy that he promised would appear. Yet the only world leader who has seen Obama’s stick wielding, clenched fist is Israeli Prime Minister, Benyamin Netanyahu.
